Bike routes San Sebastian

With more than 65 kilometres of bike lanes, or as we call them, bidegorri (literally red road because of the colour of the asphalt), San Sebastian is the perfect city for cycling. Whether it’s just for transport to get from one place to another, or for leisure, cycling is the ideal way to get around Donostia, but what can we say! That’s why we bring you some bike routes that you can do in our city and that are much more than just going from one place to another.

Bike route along the coast

Yes, this one is quite obvious, but no less interesting for that! Going from Sagues to the Peine del Viento and back via the Paseo Nuevo and, of course, our three beaches, is the perfect route to start with. Easy, short and with incredible views, this route will delight anyone. The only problem you’ll have is stopping to take photos!

Bike route through the neighbourhoods

If you want to get to know Donosti in depth, get away from the more touristy areas, and a bit more difficulty, we encourage you to discover the city’s neighbourhoods. Starting in the city centre, you can go to El Antiguo via La Concha, from El Antiguo to Amara via the Morlans tunnel, from Amara to Loyola via the Urumea River, up to Egia and down to Gros to return to the city centre. All this by bike, going up and down hills, but always using the bidegorri, so it is totally safe.

And you can extend it if you want! All the neighbourhoods are connected by bike lanes, so you can add Añorga, Aiete, Martutene, Intxaurrondo, Alza, Bidebieta and Ulia to your list of neighbourhoods to visit. Once you’re done you’ll be the biggest expert on Donosti, maybe even more than us!

Bike route to Zubieta

If all these San Sebastian neighbourhoods are not enough for you, don’t worry, we have an extra. Zubieta is a neighbourhood of San Sebastian outside the city, in fact, it is closer to the town of Lasarte than to the capital of Gipuzkoa. And it is a neighbourhood where you can get to know what Basque villages are like without going too far away. Here you will find farmhouses, a huge pelota court next to the church and that relaxed small-town atmosphere that is impossible to find in Donosti.

What’s more, it’s very easy to get here, just follow the cycle lane. We start in El Antiguo, go to Añorga Txiki, then Añorga and Belartza and we arrive in Lasarte. Once you cross the river, you are in Zubieta and the centre of the neighbourhood is only a few minutes away. Here you can have a drink to recharge your batteries and right now we can’t think of a better plan for this summer!

Bike route to Astigarraga

Astigarraga is a village very close to Donosti, famous for being the epicentre of cider culture, as most of the cider houses in the Basque Country are located here. Not only will you see a lot of apple trees along the way, here you can visit the Sagardoetxea museum, or house of cider, where you’ll learn all you need to know about cider making and you can also taste it along with a couple of pintxos. A great plan, isn’t it?

We have called this route Sagarbike (sagarra in Basque means apple) and we love it, we recommend it to everyone! If you come by our office in Sarriegui square we will give you all the information you need to do it, either alone or with friends, and with one of our rental bikes you will see how easy it is to organise it. Bike route to Pasaia

Another route that we have designed for you to get to know our environment in the easiest, most comfortable and, why not, ecological way, is called Albaolabike. Albaola is a museum located in the town of Pasaia, very close to Donosti, where they are building a whaleship from the 16th century, using the techniques of the time! A living museum, as the ship grows over time, where you can learn about whaling and the voyages of the Basques to Newfoundland in Canada.

On the way, you will also learn more about our relationship with the sea and why it is so important to us. The best activity to learn, enjoy and discover one of the most fundamental aspects of our culture. If the sea is your thing, so is Albaolabike!
