One of the obligatory visits in San Sebastian is the Alderdi Eder gardens in front of the Town Hall and with the Bahía de la Concha in the background.
It is also one of the meeting and interest points for tourists when they come to our city. Originally drawn by Ducasse, a gardener of French origin who took care of the gardens of San Sebastian back in the 19th century.
It currently presents another arrangement to the original, with symmetrical and rectangular shapes in an orderly manner that color the pieces of garden and distinguish the traffic of people in the park.
History of Alderdi Eder
Before the park was developed, the Alderdi Eder Gardens was a small mound where maneuvers were carried out in times of war. Once normality was recovered, this small piece of land became of public domain and due to the great tourist influence that San Sebastián had, it was decided to create a small park with which to see La Concha Bay.
As we have previously explained, the Alderdi Eder garden has a variety of flowers. The trees that decorate it are carefully chosen for their resistance to the wind, so well known in our city.
Alderdi Eder’s landscape style is characterized by its elegant design and the combination of French and English elements. The park has beautiful gardens with vibrant flowers, statues and beautiful fountains.
Why visit the Alderdi Eder Gardens
During your visit to San Sebastian, you cannot miss the Alderdi Eder park for various reasons, its beauty, history and location.
Natural beauty and breathtaking views
The Alderdi Eder park offers impressive views of the bay of La Concha, with its iconic golden sand beach and the green mountains that surround it. It is the ideal place to relax or take a quiet walk while you observe the landscape.
This, together with the usual color of the park, makes the Alderdi Eder gardens the perfect option to take a breather with its beautiful views of both the sea and the mountains.
History and culture
Alderdi Eder represents the history and legacy of San Sebastian in a tangible way. You will be able to feel transported to bygone times when walking through its paths and appreciating the sculptures and statues that decorate the park.
Central location
Alderdi Eder is in the heart of the city, which makes it a perfect place to explore other places of interest. From here, it is possible to walk to the Old Town of San Sebastian, where you can find traditional pintxo bars, charming shops, and lively nightlife.
The carousel in the park
In the same park there is a carousel inspired in that Belle Époque that the city had at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. It was installed at the end of the 90s to honor a carousel that was established in the city during that golden age of tourism.
In this carousel we can glimpse various drawings on its very ceiling, made by hand, imitating paintings by renowned painters such as Monet, Gauguin, Vallotton or Lautrec, even Picasso, Van Gogh, Degas or Cezanne.
It is an ideal plan for children where they can play, relax and enjoy the carousel. In this way, children can ride on said carousel on any type of animal and object: such as tigers, giraffes, swans, cars or planes.
