If there is one woman who has been important in the history of San Sebastian, it is Queen María Cristina. María Cristina of Habsburg-Lorraine or of Austria was Queen Regent during the childhood of the future King Alfonso XIII. King Alfonso XII died relatively young, and in fact his heir was born posthumously, so María […]
We’ve said it before, we’ve almost certainly said it, and we’ve definitely thought it: Gros is one of our favourite neighbourhoods in San Sebastian, if not our absolute favourite. We love walking around it, coming here to eat or have a drink, enjoying La Zurriola beach. The atmosphere is mostly authentic, so yes. But let’s […]
The main question one asks when deciding to visit a place is what to see there, as this can determine how long to visit, at what time of the year, etc. We don’t know about other places, but we are experts on San Sebastian, so here are our recommendations on what to see in our […]
The Donostia Aquarium is one of the must-see attractions if you are spending a few days in San Sebastián. Located next to the harbour, this space combines marine education, fishing history and an immersive experience that is perfect for both children and adults. A place where you will discover marine life in all its splendour, […]

Did you know that Txakoli went from being the “weird” wine in cider houses to one of the favourites for curious wine lovers? If you’re planning a getaway to San Sebastián and you’re up for some wine tourism, this slightly sparkling white wine with a touch of acidity deserves a stop (or several). The good […]
In San Sebastian, everyone visits the Old Town and the city centre, La Concha, and some tourists venture to the Gros neighbourhood… But very few venture to El Antiguo. Located on the other side of La Concha Bay, next to Ondarreta Beach, between Miramar Palace and Mount Igeldo, El Antiguo is one of those neighbourhoods […]
If you venture a little way out of the centre of San Sebastián, you will find a corner where time seems to slow down. The Aiete Palace, with its romantic gardens and stately architecture, isn’t featured on all the postcards… but it should be. It was once a royal residence and a diplomatic venue, and […]
In August, San Sebastián undergoes a transformation. It goes from being a city of quiet elegance and scenic walks to becoming one big party. And not just any party: Semana Grande (Aste Nagusia in Basque) is the most eagerly awaited event of the summer in the city. It’s nine days of fireworks, concerts, gastronomy, popular […]
Sometimes, the most special thing is right under your nose. Santa Clara Island, planted in the middle of the bay of La Concha, looks like a floating postcard… and it is. But it is also much more. This little green jewel hides secrets, routes with incredible views, contemporary art, and even a beach that only […]
Some things just happen. You go to San Sebastian and, without realising it, you end up in the Old Town. It’s not witchcraft, it’s pure magnetism. Because this little labyrinth of cobbled streets has something that hooks you: bars that smell of freshly made pintxos, façades with history and an atmosphere that doesn’t let up […]
San Sebastian is a city that you will fall in love with from the first glance, but if there is one thing that makes it a top destination, it is its coastline. Four urban beaches, each with its own vibe, mean that anyone can find their perfect spot by the sea. And the best thing […]
