History of the sculpture Peine del Viento

The Peine del Viento sculpture was designed and carried out by the artist Eduardo Chillida, who has multiple works present throughout the entire city of San Sebastian.

Despite the fact that in the location on the coast of San Sebastián we found only 3, the reality is that Chillida carried out the design and construction of 23 Peine del Viento sculptures, this being number 15.

The work was installed in La Concha Bay in 1977, and since then, it has been a key point in visits to the city of San Sebastian.

History of the sculpture Peine del viento

Perfect fusion between art and nature

As we have mentioned before, the Peine del Viento sculpture is located in an incredible place, right in an area of La Concha Bay where the waves continually break and we can see the immensity of the ocean. In addition, with the passage of time, the sculpture of the Peine del Viento is dyed in the same brown colors as the rocks that surround it, thus creating the perfect balance.

Symbolism of the sculpture Peine del Viento

What Chillida wanted to convey by placing the Peine del Viento sculpture in that location is that, as the waves continually break against them, the wind always enters “combing the Bay”.

In addition, the work represents the fragility and strength between the sea and the wind, as well as the constant struggle between the human being and nature. For this reason, such a daily objective was added to the work of the Peine del Viento.
