History of the San Telmo Museum

The history of the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián dates back to the beginning of the 18th century, where, at the proposal of its neighbors and their private donations, they formed the first municipal museum in the capital of Gipuzkoa.

From the first museum that was inaugurated between Andía and Garibai streets, passing through the School of Arts, until finally ending up in the San Telmo Convent after the acquisition and after reconditioning it to open its doors in 1932.

Currently, the San Telmo Museum is considered one of the most significant in the Basque Country. The permanent exhibits provide a fascinating experience into the history and culture of the area, from ancient times to the present day.

Visitors can study a variety of topics, such as daily life in the Basque Country, religious art, archeology, and industrial history.

Museum Floor

The museum is divided into two large rooms, with very different collections. On the one hand, the first floor that contains galleries where different true stories made by Basque authors are exhibited through almost 10,000 objects.

And the second, with a more archaic characteristic of European paintings.

Throughout the museum you can see 50 thousand pieces of all kinds, photography, history, painting or history.

The shortest tour is the first, approximately a little over sixty minutes long, and the second can be seen longer and longer through its galleries.

Price of the San Telmo Museum

General admission to the San Telmo Museum costs €6. Now there are discounts or special prices for students, large families or over 65s. The price is €3 per person. This price is maintained if the visit is in a group of at least ten people.

Although it will be free for people under 25 years of age, unemployed or disabled people, members of the same or for International Museum Day.

Another of the important points that the restaurant offers is the wine, here the most traditional Basque wines such as txakoli are offered . If you want to visit the restaurant, remember that it has a similar schedule to the museum, with the exception that some days it is until 12 at night.
